A yellow leaf can be normal aging, a sign of damaged roots, a response to low light, a pest symptom, or a nutrient issue. Adding fertilizer or water before narrowing the cause can make the original problem worse. Begin with the least dramatic explanation and collect evidence.

Describe the pattern

Is one oldest lower leaf fading, or are many leaves changing? Are the newest leaves pale while veins remain greener? Are there spots, halos, bleached patches, crisp margins, or soft translucent areas? Is yellowing uniform across the whole plant or concentrated on one side?

One old leaf aging while the plant produces healthy new growth is often normal. Rapid change across many leaves deserves attention. Photograph the plant in consistent light and compare after several days instead of relying on memory.

Check soil moisture through the pot

Do not judge only the top inch. Lift the pot to feel its weight, probe deeper with a finger or wooden skewer, and check whether water can drain from the bottom. Decorative cachepots often hide standing water.

Chronically wet mix deprives roots of oxygen. Affected roots may become dark, soft, and unable to supply the leaves, so the plant wilts even while surrounded by water. Letting only the surface dry before watering again does not fix a saturated lower root ball.

Severe drought also causes yellowing and leaf drop. Very dry peat-based mixes can shrink from the pot and repel water, sending it down the sides. Rewet slowly in several passes, then allow full drainage.

Inspect roots when evidence points below

Slide the root ball out gently if the plant remains wet for a long time, has a sour smell, declines despite reasonable light, or is tightly packed with circling roots. Healthy roots vary by species but are generally firm. Remove only dead, mushy tissue with clean tools.

A root-bound plant does not always need a dramatically larger pot. Moving up one modest size limits the amount of unused wet mix. Use a container with drainage and a mix appropriate to the species—not a dense garden soil.

Measure the light change

Indoor light falls quickly with distance from a window and changes by season. A plant that managed in summer may decline in winter at the same location. Low light reduces photosynthesis and water use, so a previously workable watering schedule may become excessive.

Direct sun can also bleach or scorch leaves, especially after a sudden move. Increase exposure gradually. Clean dusty leaves and rotate the plant for balanced growth unless the species dislikes disturbance while budding.

Look closely for pests

Check leaf undersides, nodes, new growth, and the pot rim. Fine stippling and webbing may suggest spider mites; sticky residue may accompany scale, aphids, or whiteflies; silvery scars and black specks can occur with thrips. Confirm the pest before choosing a control.

Isolate affected plants, physically remove what you can, and use the least disruptive labeled treatment appropriate for an indoor setting. Repeat inspection matters because eggs and hidden life stages may survive a single treatment.

Treat nutrients as a specific hypothesis

Nutrient deficiencies produce patterns based partly on whether a nutrient moves within the plant, but several root and pH problems mimic them. If roots cannot function, adding fertilizer increases salts without solving uptake. Confirm that light, water, drainage, and roots are reasonable first.

During active growth, use a complete fertilizer at the labeled rate for the plant and growing medium. More is not better. Periodically flushing a freely draining pot can reduce accumulated salts, but do not allow runoff where pets or children could contact it.

Review recent changes

Repotting, relocation, cold drafts, heat vents, missed watering, shipping, pest treatment, and a sudden change in humidity can trigger delayed leaf loss. Write a short timeline. When several changes occurred together, stabilize conditions instead of making another major correction each day.

Remove fully yellow leaves with clean scissors, but keep partly green leaves if they are still contributing and disease is not suspected. Then wait for the response. Healthy new growth is stronger evidence than trying to restore an old damaged leaf.
